What is a Class C Motorhome?

For anyone who’s a little confused, we’ll break down what exactly a Class C motorhome is. Firstly, a motorhome is a type of RV that requires no tow vehicle because it comes with its own drivetrain and fuel source. This means you can hop in the driver’s seat and start your next trip without any additional hassle.

However, the motorhome group is big and there are a lot of different styles and sizes. To help organize the group, the industry breaks down the vehicles even further into sub categories, called classes. There are large, bus-like motorhomes and smaller motorhomes that might even be mistaken for large vans, and then there are Class C motorhomes. Many people think of these models as the motorhome middle ground when it comes to things like size, luxury, and price. This is often true, although an easier way to spot one of these rigs is to look for the truck chassis and overhanging section of the cab.

Size

While there is a technical definition, the idea that a Class C motorhome is the mid-sized motorhome isn’t always wrong. Unlike some of the much bigger rigs, these campers are generally less than 30’ long. This will mean less vehicle to worry about and pay for while also still getting the room you’ll need for your family to stretch out. Keep in mind though, there are some models that can be much, much bigger, so the size generalization isn’t always accurate.

Price

If you do go with one of the average sized rigs, then you’ll probably be paying less as well. Less material, fewer moving parts, lower initial price. But the savings don’t stop with the price tag. You’ll also have less maintenance, so fewer trips to the mechanic, and the maintenance on these vehicles can often be cheaper and less complicated. It can be a great way to save money, especially if you’re going to want to upgrade soon or spend your money elsewhere.

Ease of Use

Once you get behind the wheel, you’ll notice another benefit of getting one of these rigs: how easy it is to drive. The controls are going to be much more similar to your commuter vehicle’s controls, including how the pedals and brakes work. Plus, the center of gravity is in a place that closely mimics what you would expect from a smaller vehicle. Because of this, it’s probably going to be easier and more intuitive to drive a Class C motorhome, say over some of the other RV types. Keep in mind, you’ll still want to spend plenty of time practicing behind the wheel so you can be more confident and experienced on the day of the big trip.
